Tune-Up

Tune-Ups in Bayview, San Francisco

Modern tune-ups are not what they used to be. Today it is mostly spark plugs (every 60,000 to 100,000 miles), filters (engine air, cabin air, fuel filter where applicable), and a fuel induction service to clean carbon off the intake valves on direct-injection engines. We tune up your car based on what your specific engine actually needs, not a one-size-fits-all menu.

What is included

Spark plug replacement (with the right plug for your engine, not a generic), ignition coil inspection and replacement if needed, engine air filter, cabin air filter, fuel filter (where serviceable), throttle body cleaning, intake valve cleaning on direct-injection engines, and a full inspection while we are in there.

  • Spark plug replacement (OEM-spec)
  • Ignition coil inspection and replacement if needed
  • Engine air filter
  • Cabin air filter
  • Fuel filter (vehicles where serviceable)
  • Throttle body cleaning
  • Carbon cleaning for direct-injection engines
  • Full multi-point inspection

When to tune up

Spark plugs: 30,000 miles for older copper plugs, 60,000 for double-platinum, 100,000 for iridium (most modern cars). Engine air filter: every 30,000 miles or sooner in dusty conditions. Cabin air filter: every 15,000 to 30,000 miles. Carbon cleaning on direct-injection engines: 60,000 to 80,000 miles depending on driving style. We will tell you what is actually due, not what is on a generic checklist.

Why the wrong plug matters

Spark plugs are vehicle-specific. The wrong heat range causes pre-ignition or fouling. The wrong gap causes misfires. We use the manufacturer-spec plug for your engine. If your owner's manual calls for iridium, you get iridium. We do not substitute cheaper plugs to pad the margin.

How you know it is time

Drop in fuel economy, hesitation off idle, an engine that hunts at stop lights, a check engine light with misfire codes, or simply hitting the spark plug interval. Any of those, bring it in and we will tell you what it actually needs.

Tune-Up questions

Real questions, straight answers.

How often should I tune my car?+
Spark-plug-driven tune-ups are roughly every 60,000 to 100,000 miles depending on the engine. Filters and induction service come up sooner. We will tell you what your car needs based on mileage and condition, not a fixed schedule.
How much does a tune-up cost?+
Wide range. A four-cylinder with easy-access plugs and standard filters is one number. A V8 with coil-on-plug and a twin-turbo direct-injection setup is another. Call with your year, make, and model and we will give you a real estimate.
Will a tune-up fix my rough idle?+
Often yes, if the cause is worn spark plugs, dirty injectors, or a clogged throttle body. If the cause is a vacuum leak, a bad sensor, or a bigger problem, we will diagnose that first. No point in tuning a car that needs a different repair.
Do you do tune-ups on hybrids?+
Yes. Hybrid engines run less than gas engines but the spark plugs still wear from on-off cycling. We service Prius, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, Insight, and most major hybrids.
